Catholic Schools Week is a very special part of our school year. It gives us an opportunity to reflect and focus on a wealth of topical issues and enjoy activities every day. We had some very interesting visitors to our school throughout the week. We were inspired by their dedication to their jobs and we enjoyed hearing about the work they do in our local community and in the wider world. This year's theme was inspired by "The Meeting of Families."....August 2018, Dublin.
Day 1 opened with an Assembly led by Brendan Duneen, a Youth Leader from Clonard. He played his guitar, and entertained the children - (just like Ed Sheeran). He introduced Monday's theme - "Our Family at Home."
In class the children had activities related to their families.
Casey Taylor from P3JH had an exciting morning in St Mary's University College, where she received a prize for coming second in a Province wide Art competition sponsored by the College. Her proud parents were there too.
Day 2 featured "Our School Family." Our school is made up of hundreds of individuals, but together we are a family of learners. Our school is a place where everyone is encouraged to achieve his or her potential. It is a place of safety and respect.
Day 3 was Grandparents' Day. After a beautiful Mass, Grandparents and friends were invited back to school for refreshments. Cards were given and there was time for some visits to classrooms.
There was a Primary 3 First Reconciliation Parents' Meeting in the evening and Father Ciaran opened the meeting with a prayer.
Day 4 featured "Our Parish Family." We have many ties to St Michael 's Parish and celebrate the reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation in the church every year. Sister Anne and her students regularly visit the school and work as Faith Friends with our P7 pupils. The P4 and 5 pupils have an Adoration session with a group of dedicated parishoners from the Adoration Group on the first Tuesday of each month. We had a visit from a representative from the Welcome Centre. Miss Heatley and her pupils make a huge effort every Christmas to supply the residents with warm clothing, basic toiletries and treats.
Primary 7 pupils celebrated the Service of Commitment in St Michael's Church.
Day 5's theme was " Our World Family." We had a visit from Maria, a Trocaire employee. She showed us a video of Kumba, Fatu, and the family which is featured in this year's Lenten Appeal. We were propelled into raising as much money as possible through our Easter ballot initiative, to help all those who suffered in last year's floods and landslides in Sierra Leone.
We had a wonderful week and gained a new perspective on many things which will continue to grow in the coming months.
